'Prez' lands with a sense of ease that feels earned. King Zepha lean into their roots here, but there’s a looseness to it that keeps things from ever feeling locked into one lane. The groove is immediate - that organ line pulls you in first, playful but deliberate, sitting comfortably over a bassline that does most of the talking. It’s rhythmic in a way that feels lived-in, not constructed. There’s a warmth to the whole thing that reflects how it was made. You can feel the hands-on process in the layers, with the sax, percussion, vocals all sitting slightly rough around the edges in a way that adds character rather than polish. The reference point behind the title comes through in spirit more than imitation. Prez is a tribute to the Cuban composer and bandleader Prez Prado. There’s a nod to that era of big, bold, movement-driven music, but it’s filtered through Leeds-based King Zepha’s own blend of ska, dub, and soul. What stands out most is the energy from King Zepha. 'Prez' captures a loose, sun-soaked energy, raw around the edges and driven purely by its sense of fun.
