‘Old Molly Metcalfe’ is the new track from eleven-piece folk collective Brown Wimpenny. Over the course of nine-minutes, the band slowly build their way through a cinematic rendition of Jake Thackray’s tune. Built on his own a cappella melody, the band add touches of eerie experimentalism and more traditional instrumental passages that develop the original into something far-reaching and expansive. The band say: “Though ‘Molly Metcalfe’ is a fictional character, her story is not fantastical. Upon first hearing it, we were reminded of Hannah Hauxwell, the subject of the Barry Cockroft documentary Too Long a Winter. It is refreshing as a folk song, both for the fact that its female protagonist is portrayed without the gaze of sexuality; and that it goes against a romanticised view of pastoral life, something that the modern folk revival is often guilty of.” The band’s new album, Long Live Brown Wimpenny, is out on June 5th, 2026, via Broadside Hacks Recordings.
